Christopher Brumfit International Scholarship

Following the death of Professor Christopher Brumfit in 2006, many BAAL members expressed a wish to set up a funded scholarship to commemorate his outstanding contribution to the association and to the discipline of applied linguistics as a whole. Accordingly, the Christopher Brumfit International Scholarship was established with the aim of providing an award for an applied linguist from outside Britain who would not otherwise have funds to attend the BAAL Annual Meeting. Applications are particularly welcome from applied linguists working in Africa, where Professor Brumfit worked during his early career, and where he sought to promote educational opportunities throughout his life.

Candidates wishing to apply for the scholarship should submit an abstract in the usual way, indicating clearly on their submission that they wish to be considered for the Christopher Brumfit Scholarship, and providing a statement about their financial need for the award. (This does not preclude concurrent application for other BAAL awards, which should also be mentioned on the abstract, although only one award can be made to any individual.)

Thanks to the continuing generosity of its supporters, the fund has been able to make an award every year since 2007. However, it would welcome further donations, large or small. If you wish to support the Christopher Brumfit International Scholarship, you can make a donation below.
