Message from the organisers

Please find below details of the upcoming BAAL Researcher Development Workshop 2023: Thinking critically about ‘impact’: a workshop for PhD students and ECRs in (critical) applied linguistics

The aim of the workshop is to bring together PhDs & ECRs who are hesitant about ‘impact’ and who wish to engage in critical reflection on the theoretical, ethical and political challenges of researcher intervention/engagement. The workshop will provide a space to map out these concerns and challenges, engage in a roundtable discussion with scholars and practitioners involved in a range of research and engagement projects, and receive peer feedback on research-engagement plans.

Here are the full abstract and poster for the event.

Confirmed speakers for the roundtable are: Mi-Cha Flubacher (University of Vienna), Sibo Kanobana (Open University of the Netherlands), Ruanni Tupas (UCL Institute of Education) and Dermot Bryers (English for Action).

The workshop will take place on from 9am-5pm on 22nd May at the University of Birmingham (in person). Unfortunately, it is not possible to join the workshop virtually.

The workshop is free to attend and open only to BAAL members. The workshop is capped at a maximum of 20 participants. Priority will be given to PhD students and ECRs in Applied Linguistics who have already collected data (PhD) or are engaged in an ongoing project (ECR), and whose research topic is germane to questions of criticality (broadly understood).

A limited number of bursaries are available to cover travel costs.

Applications can be made through the QR code on the attached poster or by using this link: https://forms.office.com/e/MrgbgHk5gd
